A recent study indicates that patients who stop using new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a prominent health publication points out that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users buying these treatments must be aware of the risk of rapid weight regain when the treatment ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a return to original mass within about one and a half years.
Comparing Treatments
The research, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally see a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the injections accounts for the amplified rebound.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this medication means hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."
An Ongoing Issue?
Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.
This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Experiences
Users who have discontinued the jabs report a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"It was like something that goes on and you become extremely hungry," said an individual.
The struggle is worsened if patients have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Use is more common among females than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians caution that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined lifestyle support.
