Our Premier Album of the Year: Rosalía's Masterpiece Takes the Top Place.

Initially, this work could seem closer to a challenging academic quiz than a new pop record by a musician whose previous hit was a collaboration with an international pop icon. Broken into four separate sections and voiced in 13 languages, it is a breathtaking orchestral-influenced album investigating feminine mystery, spiritual transcendence, and bodily change, often via the lens of different women saints. The end of a love affair—a theme handled with grounded honesty elsewhere—soars upwards here, buoyed by the constant sound of a full orchestra and contributions from an award-winning composer within an extensive list of contributors. The pure audacity by itself makes the efforts of other pop stars look rather laughable.

Transcending Academic Pretense

The fact that this album succeeds in escape overly intellectual chin-stroking is nothing short of miraculous, and complete praise belonging to Rosalía. While it's not the first time album to alchemize historical sounds and the present, the stakes feel much higher here, with the tightrope walk far more dramatic. The element that really elevates this fourth release, beyond its complex melodies, rich arrangements, and inherent theatricality, proves to be a core spirit of joy. Much like the legendary artist at her height, there is a captivating sense to the vocalist's voice that pulls the listener into its tornado. When she is breaking your heart apart, the listener still desire to be right there through the journey.

A Prime Example of Exuberance

This exuberant spirit shines clearly during a stirring piano-led ballad about a saint. It bathes in a string-drenched whirlpool for more than four moments. Then, all the music falls silent, and we hear a gleeful laugh followed by a declaration prior to a comically exaggerated orchestral surge crashes down with comedic force. The track immediately segues to the frenetic track driven by galloping strings, an imposing choral group, and a cameo role from the artist herself.

"The magic of this album is that you never exactly understand—or even wish to know—where it is going next."

Nearly each song finishes at a totally distinct place from where it began. One moment explores the transient trappings of fame over a delicate orchestration before disintegrating in electronic cacophony. Elsewhere, a cut echoing her earlier rhythmic work begins off moody and sinister, featuring menacing beats, before fluttering flamenco handclaps and an angelic chorus arrive to smooth the song's rough corners.

The Bridge Of Experiment & Accessibility

Another crucial balancing act on Lux involves navigating the line between radical innovation and mainstream accessibility. This is little coincidence that the album has achieved the artist's first release to crack the Top 5 of key charts: at its core a collection of utterly undeniable hits. A song performed primarily in English swells around a refrain that feels to collect increasingly nagging melodies as it spirals upward. This trick gets repeated by another expansive track that grows and constricts, weaving layered melodies like an intricate weave.

  • A waltz-like number charms via its playful, theatrical flair and a chant-along chorus.
  • Lyrically, it shares the cultural impact of contemporary breakup anthems, eviscerating a former lover labeled an "emotional terrorist".
  • Across the album, the vocals carry a painted-on edge, akin to a storybook figure concealing a knife: "Gold medal in acting like a scoundrel / You've won the trophy of letdown."

An Opulent Banquet for the Ears

This album is pop on a grand scale, a hungry reach for capital-A Art in an era of impending AI-generated blankness. It rejects self-absorption in favor of glorious elevation, crafting a dramatic drama that skillfully controls its inherent ridiculousness. This is an abundant well of buried gems that takes patience to completely mine but never seem like a chore. Where some big releases of 2025 felt like a meager meal, this record is a lavish banquet at which the guests at it, perhaps intoxicated on sacred wine, flutter from discussions about historical saints, the galvanizing feeling of heartbreaking sadness, and common stories about hopeless men. It is a contemporary musical from pop's most endlessly creative practitioner.
